Adult Cognitive Therapies (ACT)
The staff at Chandler House is committed to an engaged, proactive approach to treating memory disorders. Unfortunately, research – like a recent National Institutes of Health study – has shown that interventions such as diet and medications have little positive effect on improving memory skills and slowing cognitive decline.
However, there are therapies that can be employed which at the very least can slow the rate of cognitive decline and maintain memory function and overall quality of life.
At Chandler House, we have packaged these innovative therapies into a program we call Adult Cognitive Therapies, or ACT. Each day, we utilize a structured series of mental and physical tools, exercises and even simple games in both group and individualized settings to actively engage our residents who live with some level of cognitive decline.
A typical day’s ACT schedule includes some simple physical exercises, plus games and other activities meant to improve cognitive engagement, reasoning and memory skills. Residents involved in the ACT program begin their day at 9:30 a.m. and their activities run through the mid-afternoon and are led by a Chandler House staff member who has accreditation as a Dementia Care Professional by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
The results of our ACT program are encouraging, and we are excited about the long-term potential of this proactive approach to memory care.
